Big Open Books – La Piazza che legge is a morning dedicated to books, shared reading and the pleasure of listening. The event transforms Piazza del Grano into an open, participatory space where reading steps outside its traditional settings and meets the local community.

For one morning, the square becomes a large open-air reading room.

The event was conceived by Greta Marcolongo and developed in collaboration with Casa della Pesa–Waaghaus, Ufficio Educazione permanente, biblioteche e audiovisivi (Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano Alto Adige), Biblioteca civica “C. Battisti”,  Biblioteca Novacella, Biblioteca Oltrisarco (Comune di Bolzano ) and Biblioteca Terraferma, with the participation of volunteers from “Nati per Leggere Alto Adige-Südtirol” and “LaAV – Letture ad Alta Voce”.

PROGRAMME

10:00–10:30 | Ma cos’è un libro?

The book as an object, a sensory experience and a tool that sparks curiosity and imagination. Books will be physically present and displayed for the public, including children’s books and books that are particularly interesting for their shapes, materials, illustrations and tactile qualities. The aim is to start with the question “What is a book?” and open up a space for curiosity and connection.

10:30–11:30 | Bibliotombola

Anyone passing through the square or sitting at the tables can take part in the number draw. Each number corresponds to a short text to be read aloud, selected around the themes of books, reading, words and the experience of reading.

11:30–12:00 | Promemoria per chi legge

Inspired by Cristina Bellemo’s A chi insegna cards, published by Settenove, a selection of short phrases and thoughts on the value of reading will be created and distributed to participants.
