WS 10: Aluminium Party!

29/08/2024 - h. 09:00 - h. 23:00 -

Piazza del Grano, Bolzano

Weigh Station turns 10… and just as we did on that scorching hot 29th August in 2014, it’s time to celebrate together in the piazza! Between a deckchair and an ice cream (for those of us who have only seen the sea on postcards this year), it’ll be a day of festivities under the beach umbrellas and a bit of in-depth discussion about the past and the future… because in these 10 years, a lot has happened when it comes to work and creativity, and Weigh Station has always been there. Join us for a special edition of the monthly Creative Mornings breakfast, a host of performances, music, and talks… the stars of the show the WS Wallers, and we’ll also be joined by guests from near and far! We will be in front of Waaghaus / Casa della Pesa, ready to blow out our 10 candles, talk about some important topics, enjoy a series of performances and—last but not least—cool down with a refreshing ice lolly!

Creative Mornings: Ritual – Breakfast with Take a Stitch!
by Adele Buffa, Mattia Di Pierro and Martina Pisciali

In August, our monthly Creative Mornings breakfast will celebrate Weigh Station’s birthday, and this time, it’s happening in the piazza! As ever, the Creative Mornings breakfast is on us, as we meet as one chapter of the the global Creative Mornings community, which spans over 200 cities in 67 countries. Before we dive into the workday ahead, Weigh Station supplies us with the coffee and creative inspiration we need for a brighter morning. This month’s theme is #Ritual—the perfect theme for a birthday celebration! We’ll explore this theme through the participatory experience “Take a Stitch!” by Adele Buffa, Mattia Di Pierro, and Martina Pisciali.

“Over the centuries, sewing has been increasingly relegated to the home, hidden from public view. As it was replaced by industrially produced textiles, especially in the West, its traditional forms were lost or drastically simplified, putting its complex language at risk of extinction.” (Clare Hunter, The Thread of Life).

Join us in the Piazza del Grano / Kornplatz for a shared breakfast with this unique performance, where storytelling meets embroidery in a public space. “Take a Stitch!” brings “Centoventi,” a specially designed embroidery table by Adele Buffa and Amedeo Bonini, to the piazza for the first time. Gather around this circular table, inspired by traditional embroidery looms, and experience the interaction of needle, thread, fabric, and people. Listen to live stories shared by storytellers Martina Pisciali and Mattia Di Pierro, which may inspire your embroidery, and watch as the needlework creates new tales in return. Whether you’re an experienced embroiderer or a complete beginner, we invite you to join us for breakfast and to take a stitch!

Dance Performance: Me and another Me2024
by Yunjung Kim

Grounded in improvisation, Yunjung Kim’s dance performance, Me and another Me2024, is inspired by the interplay between past and present, seeking to observe the traces of time and history in space through the movement of the body.

Yunjung Kim is a maker and dance performer from South Korea based in South Tyrol. Her practice blends the traditions of her home country with European influences, which were shaped by her training at the European Dance Development Center in the Netherlands. Her work explores the connection between body, mind and movement in space and time. For her, dance is a profound act of communion, offering comfort, liberation and connection to the infinite possibilities of the human spirit.

Stand up comedy: Stand Wall UP
by Gianluca Iocolano

The stand-up comedy show Stand Wall UP by Gianluca Iocolano revolves around themes that creatives and freelancers in the cultural field in South Tyrol and beyond all deal with. In this stand-up set, he’ll touch upon various topics, seeking answers to the classic questions that freelancers and WS Wallers ask themselves: How are we percieved by wider society? How much is my life worth for a funding grant? And what the f*** does my accountant still want from me?

Gianluca Iocolano, actor, author and entertainer, is the founder and artistic director of Cababoz. He has brought his satirical cabaret show ‘Io.CoShow’ to the stage in Bressanone for several years, in which he takes up the rhythm and satire of American late night shows. He is the protagonist and author of the show ‘Vacchemagre’, a bilingual play on the history of South Tyrol, and the face of the TV format ‘Teddy’ aired on Rai Alto Adige.

WS talk: 10 guests x 10 years

Work and the creative world: what does it make sense to talk about today? This might just be the question we’ve have asked ourselves most often at Weigh Station over the years. We’ve discussed it with many guests during talks, consultations, workshops and project productions — the answer is constantly being revised, and on this day of celebrations we want to put it front and centre.

10 guests x 10 years: we’ll discuss with 10 guests from the world of local and national creativity and culture that Weigh Station has met over the years, but also with all those who would like to sit around a table with us and a cool ice lolly in hand, to go over what we talked about yesterday, or two or seven or ten years ago, but above all what the current situation is: what is urgent to talk about now?

(And yes, a free WS ice lolly is guaranteed for anyone who decides to join in!)

Happening: Sweat & Messy
by Dora Musola

Sweat & Messy, by Dora Musola, is a transformational space where visitors can unleash their creativity and explore new identities. The space provides quirky outfits and the assistance of makeup artists and stylists to encourage participants to change, transform and challenge their usual aesthetic and texture. Inspired by the backstage of the theatre, the room where the artists prepare to go on stage—trying on costumes, putting on makeup, with music playing in front of mirrors—everyone can come in and transform to celebrate!

Dora Musola is an artist working in the fields of performing art, installation, sculpture, costume and event planning. Her works currently focus on reimagining physical environments to stimulate new perceptions and experiences, with the goal of making spaces imaginative, surreal, and occasionally dystopian realms. Her artistic research is an exploration of spatial dynamics and bodily engagement to reimagine the relationship between individuals and their environment.

Funky Vinyl Dj Set with live saxophone
by Nilo and Valentin Gasser

Nilo Klotz, originally from Bolzano, began his musical journey as a DJ when he moved to Vienna in 2009. In the years since, he has expanded his repertoire, moving from drum and bass, to house, techno and, most recently, disco and funk. He is passionate about record collecting and blending different styles. In 2022 Nilo moved to his native Bolzano and has since established himself in the local scene. At WS10 he will present a DJ performance with multi-instrumentalist and composer Valentin Gasser, blending saxophone with Nilo’s funky vinyl DJ set. Valentin Gasser lives in Bolzano, teaches (primarily saxophone and piano), performs in various ensembles and as a soloist, as well as composes and arranges (jazz, classical and symphonic wind music).

Bonus track:  Performance + DJ set La nave by Borlottee

After a folkloristic trip through Sicily, Daniel Bova is back, and his car has been tampered with… The collective ‘Borlottee’ presents ‘La Nave’ (‘The Ship’: a 1998 Volkswagen Sharan), with a DJ set that runs through a mishmash of musical genres and video projections. The Ship is alive; it welcomes its performers on board, pulsating from the loudspeakers to which it is connected and from its doors, spilling over a network of electric cables.

Borlottee is a collective that plays with the nuances of contemporary art with irreverence. Born during the 2020 lockdown to survive boredom, they sprout on the mainland by creating collaborations and sowing seeds from Bolzano to Catanzaro.

All day long:

>>> Piazza del Grano is transformed into the WS beach
>>> food and drinks by Waag Café
